Women Of The West Museum Awarded Program Grant
From Colorado Endowment for the Humanities
DENVER - The Women of the West Museum has been awarded an important grant by the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities to convene a meeting of scholars and museum experts to discuss the museum's women's history trail project - Revealing Our Routes: Women of Boulder County.
"This grant enables the Women of the West Museum to continue to define trails that identify places of meaning and memory to women of the West," said Marsha Semmel, president and CEO of the Women of the West Museum. "With the help of important scholars, the museum will be able to enrich public understanding of women in Boulder County and their relationship to the broader American story through Revealing Our Routes, furthering the museum's mission to discover, explore, and communicate the continuing roles of women in shaping the American West."
In 1999, the Women of the West Museum initiated a major educational initiative designed to demonstrate how women, past and present, play a significant role in the history and landscape of the American West. Revealing Our Routes: Women of Boulder County is a history trail project that explores the contributions, accomplishments, struggles and challenges of women throughout Boulder County within the larger context of the impact of place on people's lives and the ways in which people shape their community and environment.
The Colorado Endowment for the Humanities grant will be used to deepen the scholarly framework for Revealing Our Routes by providing support for a planning meeting in May 2001. This event will involve six scholars in history, fine arts, geography, architectural history and historic preservation. The information and insights from the meeting will ground the project in the larger themes of American history and guide the development of several products, including a pocket trail map, activity book and audio guide, as well as curricular materials and online features. Guided and self-guided tours and other public programs will mark the trails' debut in Spring 2002.
