Announcement - Invitation to Apply
The Butcher Scholar Award

The Women of the West Museum seeks applicants for the Butcher Scholar Award. This award annually recognizes a promising scholar whose work and interests further the mission of the museum. Each year, a stipend is awarded to an individual for a project that enhances a current museum initiative and demonstrates innovation and creativity. The resulting project is then featured in a public program and showcased on the museum's Web site at www.womenofthewest.org.

In 2002, the Butcher Scholar focus will be Revealing Our Routes: The Trails of Western Women. The museum invites applicants to submit proposals for an individually designed research project that explores the interrelationships of people and place as they pertain to women in the American West. The project may examine themes relating to migration, immigration, personal journeys, family history, community building, and/or women's roles and activities vis-à-vis the landscapes and environments of the West.

We seek an innovative and original project, designed and implemented by the chosen scholar, that will expand our knowledge of the "trail" theme as it pertains to our mission to "discover, explore and communicate the continuing roles of women in shaping the American West." We are especially interested in projects that focus on the diversity of women in the West and their experiences, and that use historical themes to provide a greater understanding of contemporary issues. The museum will work with the scholar to create and implement a community outreach component that enhances its public impact.

Eligible applicants may include individual scholars, undergraduate and graduate students. The stipend will be up to $5,000 depending on the scope of the project.

Application Procedure:

Applications for the Butcher Scholar Award must be received at the Women of the West Museum by Friday, December 14, 2001. The winner of the Butcher Scholar Award will be announced by January 18, 2001. The chosen Butcher Scholar should complete her/his work between April and September 2002.

About the Butcher Scholar Award

The Butcher Scholar Award recognizes the vision, leadership, and generosity of Jane and Charlie Butcher, who have been strong supporters of the Women of the West Museum since the early 1990s. The Butchers' contributions to the museum - in board service, strategic planning, and support for operations, online technology, and technology-based education products - reflect their lifelong commitment to causes that make a difference in people's lives. For decades, Jane and Charlie Butcher have demonstrated their philanthropic leadership through major support for a variety of local and national organizations, for many people worthy of recognition, and for many anonymous people in need. The Butcher Scholar Award enables the Women of the West Museum to enrich the quality of its educational programs as well as benefit the career of a talented individual.

A permanent endowment has been established in the museum to fund the Butcher Scholar Award. This endowment has been funded by contributions from individuals and organizations who wish to honor Jane and Charlie Butcher and who value research and scholarship on women in the American West. Individuals wishing to make a contribution to the endowment should contact the museum.
